This, that, these और those के प्रयोग में विद्यार्थी भ्रमित हो जाते हैं। क्योंकि ये सर्वनाम और विशेषण दोनों के रूप में कार्य करते हैं। लेकिन दोनों में फर्क है। इसलिए हम सर्वनामों के संबंध में कुछ नियमों का अध्ययन करेंगे, जिससे हम उनका प्रयोग सरलता से कर सकें।

Rule 1. यदि किसी वाक्य में दो singular nouns का प्रयोग किया जाता है और खंड “और” से जुड़ा हुआ है, तो यह अंतिम एकवचन संज्ञा के लिए और वह पहले एकवचन संज्ञा के लिए प्रयोग किया जाता है। जैसा;

• Work and play are both necessary for health; This exercises the body, and that exercises the brain.

Rule 2. यदि एक ही श्रेणी की दो संज्ञाओं की तुलना की जाए तो of का प्रयोग एकवचन संज्ञा के लिए तथा of का प्रयोग बहुवचन संज्ञा के लिए होता है।

दूसरे शब्दों में,

एकवचन संज्ञा की पुनरावृत्ति को रोकने के लिए बहुवचन संज्ञा की पुनरावृत्ति को रोकने के लिए of और of का प्रयोग किया जाता है। जैसा;

• The climate of Bihar is better that that of Mumbai.
• The streets of Delhi are wider than those of Mumbai.

Rule 3. Such का प्रयोग Demonstrative Pronouns के रूप में Singular और Plural दोनों ही Sense में होता है। जैसे;

• He is the house owner and as such he has the right to maintain the house.
• Criminals are restricted by law.
• Such is your mistake that nobody can forgive you.

Rule 4. Sort of / kind of के पहले this / that तथा Sorts of / kinds of के पहले these / those का प्रयोग होता है. जैसे;

• This kind of pen is costly.
• That sort of man is hateful.
• These kinds of books are authentic.
• और Those sorts of people are laborious.
